George Chandick

Few who have ever inhabited the City of Seven Hills have had as deep an impact as George “Golden Arm” Chandick.  George, already a member of the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame, played basketball in the Greater Cleveland League for 18 years.  He became their all-time leading scorer, amassing over 10,000 points before the 3 point line became part of the game.  In 1959-60, he was the Greater Cleveland scoring champion wiht a 24 point total and a 91% foul shooter.  He was in the Top 5 of scoring for 15 of the 18 years he played.  Selected as an All-Star 15 times by the coaches in the league, both players and coaches dubbed him 'Golden Arm'.  His team won the all Ohio Sebring Tournament back in 1953 which included teams from surrounding states - as a result he was approached by the professional team the Milwaukee Hawks - back then playing professional basketball was not as glamourous as it is today and neither was the money.  He was selected to the All-Star team 15 times during his career.   In horseshoes, he was the Northeast Ohio Lake Erie AAU Champion in 1967, 1968, 1971, 1972, 1974, and the Cudel Invitational Champion in 1968, 1968 and 1971.  He founded the Horseshoe League in Seven Hills where he has been crowned champion 15 times in the league's 43 year existence.
