Barbara Stanczak

 

Barbara Stanczak is a talented and highly regarded sculptor in stone and wood, and teacher.  She joins her husband, artist Julian Stanczak, as the first husband and wife to both be inducted into the Seven Hills Hall of Fame.  Although a current Seven Hills resident, Barbara was born in Hamm, Germany.  She attended the School of Arts and Crafts in Munster, Germany, then moved to the United States in 1960.  She attended Xavier University and Case Western University, where she earned a Masters degree in Art Education/Art History.  Barbara was an art teacher for the Parma City School District and a long time professor at the Cleveland Institute of Art.  

 

Barbara has had no less than 45 exhibitions of her art work displayed in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Wisconsin.  She has also had eight collections displayed in Ohio, New York, and Connecticut.  The collections include Cleveland Artists Foundation, The Housatonic Museum of Art, The Butler Institute of Art, Central Cadillac Headquarters, Cleveland Clinic, Fairview Cancer Foundation, CARTA, The Cleveland Art Association, and Taft Collection.

 

Barbara has had several creative and commercial involvements.  She has been the curator of 37 shows for Julian Stanczak’s Solo Exhibitions, designed interior living quarters for the Volkswagen Travel Van, “Westfalia,” and Mercedes Camper, “Sven Hedin,” for a German firm, and designed and produced the print/poetry limited edition portfolio:  Color/Color, with 20 images printed with inks suspended in wax and translations of Julian Stanczak’s paintings.  She also curated, designed, and published the book Julian Stanczak, Retrospective 1948-1998, and directed and edited four different videos about her husband.

 

In 2009, Barbara won the Judson Smart Living Award for contributing 35 years of education to University Circle.  In 2011, Barbara won The Cleveland Institute of Art Viktor Schreckengost Award for Excellence in Teaching.
